Aurelio Martinez is one of the most exceptional and passionate Garifuna artists of his generation. With his solo album “Garifuna Soul”, he was chosen the newcomer of the year in 2004 by AfroPop World-wide. At the same time, the debut album received critical acclaim worldwide, reaching the Top 10 of the Year Charts. In 2010 he will finally release his second album – and it sounds very promising: The new CD will be produced by Ivan Duran, who al-ready produced the albums for Andy Palacio and Umalali (both no.1 of the EWM Charts). The album was partly recorded in Dakar and will contain con-tributions of interesting artists such as Daara J and Yossou N’Dour.
With the help of the arts council of the luxury watch company Rolex, the afro-pop legend Youssou N’Dour and Aurelio Martinez worked together closely in 2009 as they met regularly in the studio or on different stages worldwide for an inspiring musical reunion between Africa and the Americas. As result of this one year long experience, both artists played a unique concert in the charming
London Union Chapel for a selected audience and journalists.
Aurelio Martinez steps into the shoes of the legen-dary artists of the Caribbean coast of Central Amer-ica, to become the new voice of Parandea. Born in 1976 into a family with a long and distinguished musical tradition in the small Garifuna community of Plaplaya in Honduras, at the age of six, he was already playing drums at social gatherings and pick-ing up his father’s guitar as soon as he was big enough to hold it. Inspired by his grandmother and his father, Aurelio gathered a vast repertoire, which later enabled him to develop his playing and his own style. Aurelio’s virtuosity is found in his distinctive, penetrating vocals and his talent as a composer.
Aurelio Martinez has been several times on tour in Europe as a front man. At last in the WOMEX show-case and on a big summer tour in 2008, as front man of the “Tribute to Andy Palacio Garifuna Collec-tive Band” and with his own band in spring 2010. At this point we are expecting his new album and in the meantime you can enjoy his music attending any of his summer festival shows scheduled for this sum-mer.
