Electro Tango

Bajofondo Tango Club

| Argentina, Uruguay

Bajofondo has won despite its youth several international awards and public acceptance. They have managed to create a balanced mixture between tradition and modernity, integrating into their music the characteristic bandoneon and double bass as well as keyboards, synthetizers, dj scratching and modern grooves.

The germ for this project was set in 1997, when latin rock pioneer and prestigious producer Santoalla created the label SURCO (a joint venture with Universal); the first Latin regional label in history dedicated exclusively to spanish-singing alternative music and the home of many stars like Molotov, Juanes, Orishas, etc. Millions of sold copies and a handful of Grammy's later, SURCO took its next step by launching VIBRA, a new division which taps into the world of electronica without losing touch with its latin identity. The concept for Bajofondo was soon developed and matured. In 2002 this ambitious project formed by some of the most visionary and talented musicians from Uruguay and Argentina conducted by the guru Santoalla and the elegant Juan Campodonico was born.

In the past years they have won several international awards and have played for prestigious clubs and theatre audiences from London to Buenos Aires performing also in some of the most renowned festivals like Heimatklänge (Germany), Sfinks (Belgium), La mar de músicas and Montes Pirineos Sur Festival (Spain) or Roskilde (Denmark). Even the exclusive Lincoln Centre in New York fell under the Bajofondos rare spell, where the band had a memorable concert. Due to the success of their first CD-platinum album shortly after its release - they have recorded their second project to the date in 2004 heightening the figure of their extraordinary keyboard player: Supervielle
The album is following the good acceptance of its former one and has already gained a nomination for the “MTV video music awards 2005” in the category of “Best Artist Of The Year”. 2007, Bajofondo released their third album worldwide, “Mar Dulce”, which feature guests such as Nelly Furtado and Elvis Costello.

About the musicians:

Gustavo Santoalla:
Producer/Composer/Guitar/Percussion

Santaolalla´s professional music career started in 1967 at the age of 16, when he founded the group Arco Iris making history as the pioneer in the fusion of rock and Latin American folk. He has since become the most important name in Latin Alternative music, having won Grammy's for his producing work with Café Tacuba and Juanes as well as for commercial successes for million-selling Mexican group Molotov, Julieta Venegas and Maldita Vecindad, amongst others.
Most recently, Gustavo has entered the world of film music by scoring the music and producing the soundtrack for the Oscarnominated and Cannes Film Festival-winning film “Amores Perros”, and had again produced the soundtrack for the Oscar winning film “21 Grams”. Proving once again his versatility, Santaolalla produced the Grammy-nominated “Nuevo” for the classical string quartet Kronos Quartet, which pays homage to the rich musical styles of Mexico. 2006 he won the Golden Globe for “Brokeback Mountain” in the category “Best Song” and 2006 & 2007 he won the Oscar twice in a row in the category “Best Soundtrack” for “Brokeback Mountain” and “Babel”. There are only 3 more people in history winning 2 Oscars in a row and therefore he´s allowed to perpetuate his hands in the cement of the Walk of Fame this year.

Campodónico's first encounter with Santaolalla was as the guitarist for the Uruguayan rock group Peyote Asesino, which was signed to Surco in 1997 and whose release was produced by Santaolalla himself. After Peyote dissolved, Santaolalla and Juan continued to work together. In the past year, Campodónico built a name for himself as producer, having worked on the Latin Grammy-nominated Sea by Jorge Drexler, a singer-songwriter who currently enjoys success in Spain, Argentina, Uruguay and recently also in Europe. Once the idea of Bajofondo was clear in Santaolalla's mind, he knew that Campodónico would be the perfect partner and the two men teamed up in Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Los Angeles to create this new and adventurous project.
