Afro-Brazilian Pop Music

Carlinhos Brown

| Brazil

Carlinhos Brown born in 1963 in Bahia, Brazil, has become one of the most important figures to arise from Bahia's music scene. Being songwriter, bandleader, producer and percussionist, he mixes Afro-Brazilian music with many different styles in idiosyncratic and rhythmically rich tunes. The list of musicians he worked with seems endless, varying from Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Daniela Mercury to the heavy metal band Sepultura. Famous Spanish director Fernando Trueba shot the movie El Milagro de Candeal with Carlinhos and Bebo Valdez. Live, Carlinhos played with many international stars. After a concert with Carlos Santana in Montreux a duet was composed.

His fame spread quickly by appearing at Sergio Mendes’ Grammy winning album “Brasileiro” and at “Bahia Black” (both from 1992). Brown’s long awaited first solo album Alfagamabetizado released in 1996 by Virgin France was highly successful, followed by Omelete Man (1998) and Bahia do Mundo – Mito e Verdade (2001). Tribalistas, a CD that he composed, produced and played together with Marisa Monte and Arnaldo Antunes, achieved huge sales in Brazil and throughout the world, reaching no. 2 in the Italian album charts (2003).

For his album Carlito Marrón (the first album released by Sony BMG Spain) this magician, who has experimented with so many sounds, tried the Latin vein, mixing Brazilian and Cuban music. The album was honoured Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album at Latin Grammy Awards 2004. Finally, in 2007 A gente nao sonhou was released.

Since he brought a full Trio Elétrico to Barcelona in 2004 to celebrate the carnival of Bahia, and with Carlito Marrón Carlinhos Brown has become a star in Spain where he nowadays plays huge indoor and outdoor concerts. A highlight were the 2005 carnivals in five major cities in Spain, followed by hundreds of thousands of people who came only to see Carlinhos Brown and his guests. Since 1997 Carlinhos has come to Europe frequently and played more than 200 concerts at festivals, arenas and clubs.

On stage, he is like a twister. The audience has no chance to escape from the whirlwind of energy but is caught by its strength of fascinating performance and music. Within Carlinhos Brown’s hands, world music becomes reality – experimental, eclectic and astonishing.
