Drum’n Flute (acoustic)

Carlos Malta

| Brazil

A respected bandleader, arranger, composer, multi-instrumentalist and musical producer and educator, Carlos Malta is one of the most active musicians in Brazil. “The Sculptor of the Wind” is his code-name. Sculpting multiple sounds on all saxophones and flutes, Carlos Malta translates through his blow, the soul of Brazilian music.

The multi-instrumentalist.

A virtuoso flutist, saxophonist, Carlos Malta plays: ethnic bamboo flutes, bass flute, soprano and piccolo flute, sax-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone sax superbly. His name can be found in the greatest records of Brazilian music stars, and sound tracks of movies and soap operas. Furthermore Malta is a specialist in Brazilian classical music for saxophone and flute, performing with orchestras and chamber music ensembles as well.

Arranger and composer

Malta is self-educated, and by learning by himself he developed new ways to arrange for all kinds of groups. His knowledge about wind instruments makes him a great musical painter, a  sculptor of sounds , bringing new colors to sound. The newest releases of Gal Costa and Ivan Lins contains his arrangements. His compositions have been recorded on his CDs " Escultor do Vento" , "Pife Muderno" - finalist Grammy 2000 ," Pixinguinha Alma e Corpo" and "Pimenta"  following an intuitive field of emotion, surprises with new phrasing, rhythms, harmonies and melodies inspired in his rich musical legacy. Malta has also arranged for symphonic orchestras.

The performer

Professional musician since he was 18 years of age, Malta has a long list of Jazz Festivals such as: North Sea, Montreux, Montreal, Paris, Berlin, Juan-les-Pins, Cannes, Pori. He performed at the great temples of music like: Theatre de la Ville (Paris), Philharmonic Hall (Cologne), Friends of Music Hall (Athens), Radio Concert Hall (Copenhagen), Teatro Municipal (Rio de Janeiro), and on his passport the stamps of more than 30 tours around the globe, playing with musicians such as Hermeto Pascoal, Gilberto Gil and many others.

Under his own name he won new audiences with his brilliant live performances at New Orleans Heritage Jazz Festival, Sábath Tókyo (Japan), Mogale City (South Africa), Festival de Amiens (France), Fifres de Garonne and Cité de La Musique (France), Festival de Essaouira (Morocco), Brasil em Caracas (Venezuela), Popkomm (Germany) earning him recognition in several music writers' year-end wrap-ups of the best shows. Lately, Malta is doing a Tribute for Bird, performing Charlie Parker's solos, opening widely his musical reach. He performed with Chucho Valdéz and Michel Legrand during the Jazz Plaza Festival in Havana – Cuba.

The bandleader

Malta created several projects, and also different instrumental formations.

Pife Muderno is a quintet (2 flutes/ethnic bamboo flutes + 3 percussions) that builds the bridge between the tradition and the modern Brazilian folk music.

The Coreto Urbano (a ten piece band with  tuba, bass-trombone, trombone, euphonium, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, 3 percussionists), the Pimenta quartet (acc. bass, acc. 6/12 guitars, drums, sax and flute), Pixinguinha Alma e Corpo string quartets, jazz trios, and very special duets with cello, double bass, guitar and piano make Malta's universe of music a great source of sounds. His concerts have been pointed out as outstanding, gifted and highlight events.
