Musical maverick Cheikh Lô is a unique figure, transcending genres and cultures to produce a sound that is unmistakably his own. From an early age Cheikh was only interested in music, running away from school to teach himself drums and guitar on borrowed instruments. During his teens Cheikh listened to all kinds of music, especially the Congolese Rumba which was popular throughout Africa.
Since 1996 when Youssou N’Dour opened doors to Europe for him and when World Circuit released his first album Ne La Thiass’ Cheikh Lô has achieved a very high acclaim by critics and audience. He immediately won several important awards, such as the Kora Awards in 1997. In 1999 he released Bambay Gueej, another masterpiece, spanning a bridge to Cuba.
Cheikh has constantly sought out new and interesting rhythms to work with. This adventurous spirit lead him to discover Brazilian music, and travel to Bahia, Brazil, where he immersed himself in the distinctive rhythms. Lamp Fall, his third album for World Circuit released in 2005 (which remained number one of the World Music Charts Europe for three months) has a Brazilian touch and, maybe because of this influence, a distinctly contemporary feel, incorporating different styles whilst retaining a deep spirituality that is essential to Cheikh Lô. Indeed, most essential is Cheikhs voice, of which Youssou N’Dour has said: I found something in his voice that’s like a voyage through Burkina, Niger, Mali.
Cheikh Lô’s music weaves together a myriad of colours and textures much like the patchwork clothes that are his trademark, and brings him once again to the forefront of the contemporary African music scene.
Live on stage, Cheikh Lô is spiritual and energetic. His performances have pleased thousands of people around the globe. Following the release of Lamp Fall he toured extensively in Europe (three times in 2006 alone!).
