Africa's great musical maverick, the Senegalese Sufi troubadour Cheikh Lô is a unique figure, transcend-ing genres and cultures to produce a sound that is unmistakably his own. And the best thing is that he is back with a new album “Jamm” after a 4 years break!
His previous CDs have always collected excellent international critics and stayed for several months on the No.1 of the World Music Charts. On this new record, Lô's infectiously signature blend of semi-acoustic flavours - West and Central African, funk, Cuban, Flamenco - has been distilled into his most mature, focused, yet diverse statement to date with songs in four different languages.
For many experts this is Lô's most beautiful work up to now and his husky, unique voice is sounding better than ever.
Indeed, his voice, is his strongest argument on stage and not only audiences all over the world knows this, but also great musicians like Youssou N’Dour.
He said: “I found something in his voice that’s like a voyage through Burkina, Niger and Mali”. Cheikh Lô´s charismatic personality makes him a unique live performer and he has collected since his beginnings rave reviews: ‘A rare talent destined to become one of world music’s biggest stars’, The Times - ‘a compelling performer with energy and personality to match that of the early Bob Marley’, The Guardian. Live on stage, he is spiritual and energetic. His performances are mag-netic and always unique having pleased already
thousands of people worldwide for the last decade and following the release of his successful last re-cord Lamp Fall he toured as well extensively in Europe (three times in 2006 alone!).
From an early age Cheikh was only interested in music, running away from school to teach himself drums and guitar on borrowed instruments. During his teens he listened to all kinds of music, especially the Congolese Rumba which was popular through-out Africa. Since 1996 when Youssou N’Dour opened doors to Europe for him producing his first record and when World Circuit released this album Ne La Thiass, Cheikh Lô has achieved a very high recognition by critics and audience. He immediately won important awards, such as the Kora Awards and the Ordre Nacional de Merite de Léon and toured very successfully through several relevant festivals worldwide.
Cheikh Lô’s new songs weave together a myriad of colours and textures much like the patchwork clothes that are his trademark, and bring him once again to the forefront of the contem-porary African music scene. Don´t miss this autumn the chance of booking Cheikh Lô for the first time in many years and enjoy live his new repertoire!
