Popular Brasilian Music

Chico César

| Brazil

Chico Cesar is one of the most in-demand songwriters and performers in Brazil. He rose as a star with his debut album in 1995, of which “Mama Africa” became a huge hit and remains a hymn until today. Nowadays, with six studio albums and three compilations (of which one has been released by Putumayo), Chico César is one of the most established artists of Brazilian Pop Music. He has written many songs for singers such as Daniela Mercury, Gal Gosta, Maria Bethania, which became huge hits. He is also internationally recognized as a songwriter with an uncompromising social conscience and commitment.

The magnificent Northeastern Brazilian musician creates a musical melting pot, blending traditional Brazilian and African motifs with pop musical elements. Chico César’s music is clearly influenced by the bouncy rhythms and accordion-driven melodies of his region, like carimbó, reizado and coco, but he also claims inspiration from a variety of sources including Donna Summer, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and numerous Brazilian artists from a wide range of genres. Although he was born a generation later than Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, César shares their passion for melody and the luscious intricacies of the Portuguese language and he soon became one of the most appreciate voices of Brazilian popular music.

Chico César was treasured as a guest and partner for recordings and live concerts (e.g. Badi Assad, Lenine, Moska, Pedro Aznar (Argentina), Pedro Guerra (Spain), Zeca Baleiro and many others) and he is one of the few Brazilian artists who performed even in the remotest regions of his country. In Europe, between 1997 and 2005, Chico has played for more than 250 concerts, between renowned festivals and small clubs. Most of the time he has played with his band as well as solo and in duo, after the release of “De uns tempos para cá” (2005), which has been recorded with the renown string quintet “Quinteto da Paraíba”, Chico radically changed his live format receiving lots of enthusiastic reviews and becoming more and more successful worldwide.

Due to his political career as minister of culture in his home town Joao Pessoa and then of his home state Paraíba he hasn’t been on tour in Europe since 2005, but in 2012 he’s coming back with a band of high talented musicians and an amazing project.
