Gianmaria Testa’s warm, dusky voice tells stories of wind and memories, earth and fog, objects that soar from one horizon to another. His music is both personal and richly melodic, flecked with accents of tango, bossa nova, habanera and jazz, but as minimal and essential as a pencil sketch, imparting great beauty with simplicity and directness.
Gianmaria was born near Cuneo (Piemont) in 1958. He grew up in a family of farmers and taught himself to play guitar, writing his first songs as soon as he learned his chords. In 1993 and 1994 he won the first prize at the Recanati Festival for emerging singer-songwriters, where he met a French producer who then produced his first album, in 1995. On the heels of Montgolfière’s superb reviews, Gianmaria made his début at one of Paris’s most important clubs, New Morning, and only a few months later he sold out the renowned Olympia, with 2500 seats. This was followed by several tours and two more records produced in France.
In 2000, with his fourth CD Il valzer di un giorno, Gianmaria had his breakthrough in Italy and started to play at the most prestigious theatres. The album has sold more than 80.000 copies to date. Altre Latitudine (2003) had similar success. Both albums were released all over Europe and in North America where he also started giving concerts.
Since the beginning of his career Gianmaria has been very open-minded for collaborations (and confrontations) with jazz musicians such as Enrico Rava, Paola Fresu, Gabriele Mirabassi, Battista Lena, both on CD and live. The driving rhythms of jazz; lively fanfares, solos, sudden silences: they all served to emphasize Gianmaria’s sincerity and his subtle, elegant way of telling tales of melancholy and quiet joy.
The album, Da questa parte del mare (October 2006), was a turning point in his artistic production. It is a “concept album”, wholly focussed on a single topic, that of modern migrations. The album was acclaimed by critics and fans alike and sold very well. In 2007 Gianmaria Testa became an artist in great demand by promoters everywhere in Europe. In late 2007 Lampo an old album which had been out of stock was re-released. Some of Testa’s most beloved live songs are on Lampo. Finally his latest album "Solo dal Vivo", said to have brought the concept of the singer-songwriter to a whole new level, was released in 2009. In February 2010 a special, limited edition of "SOLO-dal vivo" - the first Gianmaria Testa's live - will be released. It will include the live CD and a videoclip of the unpublished song "Come al cielo gli aeroplani".
