Singer/Songwriter

Jorge Drexler

| Uruguay

Artists as prestigious as Ana Belén, Víctor Manuel, Neneh Cherry, Pablo Milanés, Ketama, Miguel Ríos, Ana Torroja, David Broza, Rosario Flores, Lorenzo Jovanotti, María Rita, Paulinho Moska, Jaime Roos, Adriana Varela and Bajofondo Tango Club have all recorded Jorge Drexler songs on their own albums.

Jorge began studying piano at five years of age and took up classical guitar at eleven. He subsequently trained in musical language, harmonies, composition and vocal techniques. In 1987 he won first prize in a literary competition run by the Universidad de la República del Uruguay in the short story section, while also receiving a special mention for poetry.

Drexler began writing songs midway through 1989 and released his debut album “La luz que sabe robar” in 1992, the same year that he graduated as a doctor from the Universidad de la República Oriental del Uruguay.

The first stage of his musical career in Uruguay and Argentina saw him awarded numerous prizes, perform many concerts and release his second album “Radar” (1994). He then moved to Spain to record the third instalment “Vaivén” (1993), which featured collaborations from Joaquín Sabina, Luis Eduardo Aute and Javier Álvarez. Later would come “LLueve” (1995), “Frontera” (1999) and “Sea” (2001), which was nominated at the Latin Grammy Awards, the MTV Latin Awards and Gardel Awards, among others.

While recognised with many distinctions over his career, it was not until 2005 that Drexler achieved popular success, winning the Oscar for his song Al otro lado del río (featured on the Eco album) from the film “The Motorcycle Diaries”. This was the first ever song performed in Spanish to win the oscar. In 2007 he won the Best Album prize for his latest album “Doce segundos de oscuridad”, which was also nominated for the Latin Grammy Awards and the North American Grammy Awards.

Drexler’s songs have also featured in advertisements (Renfe, Knorr, ONCE, etc.), while in cinema, apart from “The Motorcycle Diaries”, Drexler’s songs have been used on several films such as “No sos vos, soy yo”, “It’s not you, it’s me”, “Retrato de mujer con hombre al fondo”, “Las razones de mis amigos”, “Spoils of war”, “El nido vacio”...

He has just released his ninth record “CARA B”, recorded live during his November 2007 tour of seven Catalan cities. Featuring an innovative and unique format, the show includes two sound engineers/instrumentalists, Matías Cella and Campi, who program and add to the performance of the songs based on sounds recorded (in real time) from the stage, the seating area (with 6 microphones placed amongst the audience) and the city where the concert is played.

Furthermore, the film director Manel Huerga has made a film about the CARA B tour that, rather than being a straight forward recording of the live show, is film whose script is driven by sound and fate. The film is to go through the usual channels (film and festival circuits) and the intention is to broadcast the film on television, but not until the end of 2008.
