Singer, arranger, musician and producer. Very few artists gather a renown talent in so many activities. Womex discovery 1999 and Latin Grammy Winner 2002: indubitable Lenine is one of the most diversified artists in the Brazilian music world. His universe reaches from traditional North-eastern music to fast Drum´n Bass Beats and further on to hard Rock’n Roll. The Rhythm always beats in Lenine’s music, but he is also a soft singer-songwriter on the inside.
In the early 80’s, a quite astonished audience saw Lenine and his band invade the stage and beating bass drums of rustic manufacture, singing traditional „Maracatu’s" refrains from the state of Pernambuco, and using a language with innumerable pop elements, balanced with the regional aspects of his music. In 1982 he recorded his first album, “Baque Solto”, with Lula Queiroga. In 1993, Lenine released “Olho de Peixe” with Marcos Suzano. That record took both artists to international tours in Europe, United States and Japan. The maturing period between both albums showed Lenine as a very prolific composer. Today, he has more than 500 songs of which around 100 have been recorded. Some of them by great artists from different generations and styles: Maria Bethânia, O Rappa, Daniela Mercury, Elba Ramalho, Fernanda Abreu, Ney Matogrosso, among others.
With his album Na Pressao, released in 1999 and with a splendid Womex performance in the same year, Lenine had his international breakthrough. He has since then played all over the world. It was France where he had his biggest success and album sales. In October 2002 he presented his album Falange Canibal in Paris and was again enthusiastically received by the press and the audience. The album achieved a Grammy Latino for the best contemporary Brazilian Pop album. After five albums recorded in Brazil Lenine was invited to record his first DVD, and live CD “InCité”, at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, in 2004.
Finally MTV Acústico, was released in 2006 as CD and DVD. Among the guests are Richard Bona and Julieta Venegas. This new project toured twice in Europe in 2007 and 2008. For the first time Lenine presented Brass players live on stage. Even “unplugged” the energy on stage is amazing! . His latest album “Labiata” was released in early 2009.
