An advocate of Cape Verdean culture, Mayra Andrade establishes her unique style on stage. Carrying her deep, warm and velvety voice, she switches with remarkable ease from Morna to Funana and Coladeira to Batuque ascribing a unique jazzy touch to them. Her personality and talent bring a true breath of freshness to the music of the Cape Verdean islands -- the legacy of a blend of African rhythms and those of the Old Continent.
Mayra Andrade was born in Cuba of Cape Verdean parents. She lived in Cape Verde, Senegal, Angola and then Germany. In June 2001, at the young age of 16, she was to win the Golden Medal in the singing contest at the Francophone Games in Ottawa Hull, Canada, competing against contestants representing 35 different countries. Cape Verde would thus win its first golden medal ever obtained at an international competition.
After her victory at the Francophone Games, Mayra has not ceased lining up concerts. In Cape Verde at first, in Praia and Mindelo, and afterwards at the mystic hall “Coliseu” in Lisbon, where she sings alongside Bau - Cesaria Evora’s former instrumentalist. In Brazil, she represented her country by participating in the recording of an AIDS benefit single along with the best representatives of the Portuguese-language music world, Chico Buarque being among them. She is at the center of much talk among the small Parisian stages and she delighted the audience during a beneficence concert that took place May 15, 2004, in front of the Eiffel Tower, Champs de Mars. In January 2005, she is invited by Charles Aznavour to record with him, in a duet, a track sung in French for his upcoming album.
Finally, in 2006 the next album navega is released and Mayra starts performing on international festivals. In 2007 she toured all over Europe and came to play several festivals in Germany, too. Before, a promotional tour in early 2007 in clubs had been very successful. Unquestionably; Mayra Andrade captivates and knows how to assert herself from the start.
In 2008-2009, Mayra Andrade travelled a lot over Cape Verde, Brazil and Cuba in order to record her new album "Stória, stória" (2009 Sony BMG). In July 2009, she went on tour in Europe to present her new Album, and played five concerts in Germany, "Jazzbaltica" and "Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele" among others. In 2010 she will be presenting her album on a club tour. We are looking forward to your enquiries.
