Laveaux’s distinctive husky purr and folksy, soul-soaked guitar finger picking will grab you from the very first chord and the very first note. So it’s no coincidence that she has captured the attention of the media, fellow artists and concert promoters alike: She was asked to open shows for Amadou & Mariam, Feist, Jamie Cullum and Lura, and has played with her band in Tokyo, Berlin, New York, Paris etc. She’s only 24 years old, yet has re-ceived enthusiastic critics from the biggest media for her debut album “Campher & Copper” and has already performed at festivals such as San Sebastian: Jazz Cully; La Mar de Musicas; Mont-real Jazz Festival and Les Francofolies.
Mélissa Laveaux comes from a Haitian-Canadian background and lives in France, which is cur-rently her biggest market. The mixture of these 3 different cultures is reflected clearly both in her music, as well as in her live performances: The minimalist arrangements highlight the energy and poetic impact of her lyrics. Her voice alone, un-furls, majestic and fragile, profound and sensual, in it lies a deep stirring under the immediate se-duction, almost reworked and rearranged by the ever-present trilingualism in her life: the fluidity of the English, the nonchalant syncopation of the Creole, and the harmonic sophistication of the French. Her repertoire comprises mostly of origi-nal pieces of an impressive maturity and fresh-ness, nowadays rarely found amongst the new generations.
It seems all the signs point in the same direction: Mélissa Laveaux is truly a great discovery with a promising career ahead of her! All that’s left now is for you to fall under the spell of her folk-blues arrangements, catchy hand claps, whispery vo-cals and her unique percussive finger-styles guitar!
