Born as Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s youngest son, Seun Kuti is following the footsteps of his father. Being Nigeria’s most famous musician in the 1970s and 80s, Fela Kuti also is known as the afrobeat pioneer. Even beyond the borders of Africa, his name stands for powerful and genuine music. Without a doubt his influence on African pop music can be compared to Bob Marley’s influence on Reggae and pop music. It is definitely possible that Seun Kuti can gain analogical importance for a new generation of music fans.
Taking his first saxophone- and piano lessons at the age of eight, he fast became a part of his father’s legendary band Egypt 80 which is still playing with him today. When his father died in 1997 Seun Kuti was only 15 years old. But the experience he gained by playing in a combo consisting of more than twenty musicians gave him the strength to take over his father’s position as bandleader.
From that day on the audience immediately accepted him as the new head of the band. Today, with the experience of nearly 15 years as the bands leader, he is taking Egypt 80 back to the roots of afrobeat music.
Mixing Jazz and Funk with the distinctive groove of African percussion and – typical for the Kuti-family – political lyrics, Seun is taking the tradition of afrobeat to a new level: “Afrobeat is danceable and afrobeat lives!”
In his concerts Seun Kuti amazes his audience with his personal style, his dark and powerful voice as well as with his solo parts. Thanks to his enormous power he is able to constantly push forward the band, playing songs of his father as well as compositions of his own.
Since 2005 Seun Kuti and his band is playing concerts all over Europe: Les Nuits de Fourviere 2005 – Sphynx 2005 – Couleur café 2006 - Mar de la Musica 2006 – Pireneo Sur 2006 – Art Rock 2006 - Les Eurockéennes 2006 – Musiques Métisses 2006 – Festival de Jazz de Montreal 2007 – Roskilde 2007 – Nice Jazz Festival 2007 – Lugano Jazz Festival – JVC Jazz Festival Paris 2007– Oslo World Music Festival 2007.... In 2007 he even did shows in Chicago and at the Montreal Jazz Festival, where he played in front of an 100 000-people audience.
At the world music expo WOMEX 07 Seun did an incredible show, becoming the highlight of most of the WOMEX visitors.
Besides a two-track vinyl, in 2008 his first studio album “Many Things” has been released. His new album From Africa With Fury: Rise has been announced for March 2011.
