Brasil is an imense country – 5330 km between north and south – almost the same distance from the surface to the earth’s core. The roads are long, slow, and often hot and dusty. Exploring Brazil is like traversing a continent with a cultural range so distinct that often the only similarity is the use of the portuguese language.
In the Zona da Mata, North of Pernambuco state in the northeast corner of Brazil, street music is almost always performed by percussion and horn orchestras, that besides giving musical support to rhymed poetry, have in common among them the rhythmic vigor and the function of making people dance. A mix of ballroom dance and sarau, a night of ciranda, maracatu de baque solto, or coco de roda, may last hours and end only when the first rays of the sun arrive, demanding from the poets that attempt it the mastery of diverse rhyme styles as well as creativity and resistance.
Born in the cosmopolitan city of Recife, but from a family until this day linked to its rural origins, Siba grew up between these two worlds, as distinct parts of a single entity. From his first encounters with the traditions of the Mata Norte he began a long history of learning and collaboration, exercising through the years the fundamentals of the art of rythmic poetry, becoming on the main masters of the new generation of ciranda and maracatu nowadays.
At the same time, as a member of Mestre Ambrosio’s group, he developed an innovative and personal musical language, where the dialogue between traditional and cosmopolitan, past and present, street and stage are an unmistakable brand.
In 2002 after seven years living in the city of São Paulo, Siba decided to return to Pernambuco state to reunite the Fuloresta band, formed by the singers and percussionists Biu Roque,Mané Roque, Cosmo Antônio and Zeca, with Roberto Manoel-Trumpet ,Galego-Trombone,João Minuto-Sax Tenor and André-Tuba, traditional musicians from Nazaré da Mata, a small town of 30000 inhabitants located 60km from Recife. In 2003, in a mobile studio in the rural zone in Nazaré, Fuloresta recorded their first CD , that also was released in Europe by the French label, Outros Discos.
The band played in different venues in Brazil and also did three tours in Europe from 2004 to 2006, in countries like France, Holland, Germany and Belgium, developing as time passed a unique manner of adapting the music from long duration street parties to the condensed stage format. "We never experience our past or tradition as a cage. On the contrary, our tradition offers us a vast vocabulary, and we do our best to use all of it every day and especially all night long. It is impossible to reproduce the way we involve the whole community in poetry and collective dancing during the whole night, although the hour or 90 minutes that a festival can offer us will provide a very good opportunity to catch a glimpse of our actual musical impact.” as Siba explains.
Siba released in 2007 his second CD with Fuloresta: “Toda vez que eu dou um passo/O mundo sai do lugar” (“Every step I take the world changes place.), in partnership with “Ambulante Discos”, a label owned by producer Beto Villares, who is also Siba´s partner in “Fuloresta do Samba”. This cd was nominee to the 2008´s Latin Grammy.
Ciranda, coco de roda and frevo rimado are the predominant rhythms in this album. The lyrics are direct and the poetry sounds strong, anchored by rhodes, guitars, dubs, and an orchestra which allows more elaborate and daring arrangements. Even the frevo, a “sacred” style in Pernambuco doesn’t appear in its conventional structure but instead in the service of poetry following the logic of the matutos. Special participations by singer Céu, producer Beto Vilares, Fernando Catatau – enfant terrible of brazilian rock – or by Marcelo Pretto give the recording an unexpected cosmopolitan tone, but in live performances, the Fuloresta – anywhere in the world, evokes its roots and offers the spectator a hedonist evening that only people from the Zona-da-Mata – as well as people from lands that live with daily suffering- know how to do : crazy and unexpected, full of beautiful images and free improvisation from the depths of the soul.
Since 2004, Siba e a Fuloresta toured in Europe every year, it was 6 international tours in countries like, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Belgium and others, performing in important festivals like Sines Festival, Festival MED, La Mar de Músicas, Paléo Festival Nyon, Glatt & Verkehrt and many others.
