With its vivid club scene Mega city Sao Paulo is the laboratory of new electronic sounds in Latin America. This is where Sonic Junior has appeared, a one man musical project by Brazilian producer, percussionist and singer Juninho. He explores the boundaries of electronic music, mixing beats with organic percussion. It’s a fusion of concepts and tendencies in a brew of interaction between different musical languages and vibes. The mission is clear: make music to make people dance until their minds have lost the control over their body.
Sonic Junior’s third album, Pra Fazer o Mundo Girar (to make the world go around; Mundo Perfeito Records) was released in 2005 and was elected by Brazilian musical press one of the most important independent albums of the year. The album, which mixes instrumental music with vocal songs, brings to the surface his urban experiences in the city of São Paulo, putting it together with his universal influences, from electronica to samba; from old school funk to Jamaican dub. Sonic Junior’s songs are part of compilations in Brazil and Europe as well as of film and advertising soundtracks. In 2004 and 2005 two video clips from Sonic Junior’s songs (A Casa da Madame and Pulsar) were nominated for Best Electronic Video at MTV Brazil Musical Awards.
On stage, Juninho controls a Groove box, sings, plays the drums, djembe and other percussive instruments, incorporating by the Sonic Junior organo-electronic vibrations. The energy of his performances is extremely joyful.
In Brazil, Sonic Junior is a constant presence at the most important festivals all over the country. He has appeared on special events with video artists. In Europe, Sonic Junior represented Brazil at “Fête de la Musique”, in Paris (2005), and at Popkomm in Berlin (2006). His first European tour in 2007 included big rock festivals such as Roskilde, Lowlands (Holland) and Nuke (Austria) and world music festivals such as Afrolatino (Belgium), Caliente (Zurich) and Festival Mundial (Holland) as well as club gigs in capitals like Amsterdam, Berlin and London. The audiences liked it a lot and danced like hell. Mission fulfilled … but not completed. See you back in Europe soon, Sonic Junior!
