The most compelling music out of Caribbean Central America today comes from Garifuna People. The latest project from this region, Umalali, has been conducted by the Womex Award 2007 winning team of label Cumbancha and producer Ivan Duran: Blending the rich vocal textures of women from the Garifuna communities of Central America with echoes of rock, blues, funk, African, Latin and Caribbean music, Umalali is an entrancing journey into the heart and soul of a unique and inspiring culture. There are the stories told in the songs: of hurricanes that swept away homes and livelihoods, a son murdered in a far-off village, the pain of childbirth and other struggles and triumphs of daily life.
Their debut album “Umalali” (2008) reached two months the NO.1 of the EWMC and was elected the No.2 of the World Music Albums of the year 2008 by WOMEX and the World Music Charts Europe.
This is how “music guru” Charlie Gillett described the essence of this unique project for The Observer Music Monthly: “Surely this is how Amy Winehouse wishes she could sound. Amy’s voice is remarkable, but it isn’t hers- it’s borrowed from black Americans. Effortlessly, without artifice, Sofia Blanco, her daughter Silvia and all the other singers let their voices come from deep inside themselves, pinning their melodies to our hearts, connecting us to a time and a place we’ve never been to but can now imagine.”
In summer 2008, two of the Umalali women came to Europe and USA together with Aurelio Martinez and the Garifuna Collective, as part of a very successful Tribute Tour in memory of Andy Palacio. And in August 2010, the entire women choir will come to Europe for the first time to present the beautiful songs of their own album live on stage.
