The New York Times describes Idan Raichel as the Middle Eastern Peter Gabriel because both share a similar multicultural musical approach and message of tolerance.
The Idan Raichel Project has already celebrated its successes on an international scale and performed in prestigious sold out venues all over the world, such as the Opera House Sidney, Kodak Theatre Los Angeles, Piazza del Campidoglio Roma, Queen Elizabeth Hall London, Teatro degli Arcimboldi Milano, Konzerthaus Vienna and many more.
While recent headlines are dominated by news of conflict and war in the Middle East, this Israeli musical collective has achieved success by looking beyond intercultural differences and celebrating the value of diversity. With its blend of traditional Ethiopian folk music, Arabic poetry, Yemenite chants, Biblical psalms and Caribbean rhythms, the Idan Raichel Project has already taken Israel by storm with multiple number one hits and several platinum sales - they sold more than 300.000 albums.
In November 2006, the international CD release of The Idan Raichel Project by Cumbancha received very good reviews in media and press all over Europe. The third album was released in May 2009 in Europe, with contributions of great international artists, such as Mayra Andrade (Cap Verde) or Marta Gomez (Colombia). In Israel, the album has already gained platinum status and the Idan Raichel Project was recently chosen as “Musical Group of the Decade” by the Israeli MTV.
With its multicultural influences and implicit messages of unity and respect for diversity, The Idan Raichel Project presented the new face of Israeli popular music for the first time. The moral of the story is imbedded in its texts of love and faith, spun in ancient languages, sung and spoken amidst the mystical ambiance of its exotic, otherworldly melodies. With a powerful live show, The Idan Raichel Project has already won numerous fans all over the globe and they will win even more while touring in 2010 to present its new work to European audiences.
