Next up was Italy’s Vinicio Capossela, who was introduced as “channeling the spirit of Federico Fellini and Jack Kerouac.” A moment later, he leapt onto the stage dressed as a minotaur. Backed by a clever band featuring a baritone sax, guitars, keyboards and a supple rhythm section, the engaging and madcap Mr. Capossela sang in Italian and gestured wildly. When the song ended, he shucked off the furry costume and horned mask, and then turned himself into a facsimile of Medusa. “Don’t be afraid. Medusa is nice.” He explained she’s nervous because whenever she meets a man, he turns to stone or salted cod. “She loves the cha-cha-cha.” Naturally, a cha-cha followed. Mr. Capossela has been called the Tom Waits of Italy, and his song about crows-“Come on!” he shouted. “Let’s crow!”-would fit nicely in a Waits set. The crowd that gathered around the stage wore expressions of bemused satisfaction.

Traore and company were followed by Italy's irrepressible Vinicio Capossela, who took the stage with his band dressed in their best Spaghetti Western duds - and sounded like a cross between Tom Waits and Sergio Leone. With a Theramin. At first the audience didn't quite know what to make of him, but his loopy songs and sheer enthusiasm won the room over and by the end of his set - with Capossela dressed in full Roman Centurion's costume, and band providing an imperial fanfare - the crowd gave him a unanimous thumbs up. After his set, a sweaty Capossela reflected on the SXSW experience over a bottle of Lone Star. "You know Austin is unique," he remarked. "There's nothing like SXSW in Italy. Where else can I come and play fake Italian cowboy music for real Texans? "
